Battle of Britain Collection
2010 marks the 70th Anniversary. It was the early point in WWII, when the vastly outnumbered RAF broke Adolf Hitler’s attempt to gain air supremacy over Great Britain.
After the Dunkirk, France, evacuation of British and French soldiers in June 1940, Winston Churchill addressed the House of Commons of the British Parliament on 11th June: "The Battle of France is over. The Battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilisation. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned on us. Hitler knows, that he will have to break us on this Island or lose the war. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duty, and so bear ourselves that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth lasts for a thousand years, men will say - This was their finest hour.".
The RAF took delivery of the Spitfire in 1938 and by 1939 it was in service with 9 Squadrons. The Spitfire was in production throughout WWII. Developed to achieve a top speed approaching 350 mph, it was the fastest fighter aircraft in the world. Over 20,000 came off the production lines.
The ‘Battle of Britain’ was waged by the German Luftwaffe against the UK in late summer 1940. Their aim was to gain air superiority over the RAF (Royal Air Force). Had Adolf Hitler achieved this, the Germans might have launched their planned Operation Sea Lion - a sea and air invasion of Britain. The RAF Roll of Honour recognises 595 non-British pilots (out of 2,936), who flew sorties during the battle. There were 1,494 RAF aircrew lost during the Battle of Britain, as recorded in The Battle of Britain Memorial Chapel at Westminster Abbey, London.
At the height of the Battle of Britain, in August 1940, Winston Churchill visited an RAF operations room and was deeply moved at the drama unfolding. A few days later, on 20th August 1940, in a speech to the House of Commons, he paid tribute to this massive effort: "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few".
