A tribute to the courage and sacrifices of Coastal Command's Strike Wing air crew. Frank Wootton's painting shows one of the most spectacular attacks in the whole history of the Strike Wings, which took place on 21st July 1944. Four Squadrons of the Langham and Strubby Wings have engaged a very large and well-protected convoy off the East Friesian Islands with over 30 escort ships and nine merchantmen. The protecting flak ships are deadly, some with as many as 72 anti-aircraft guns, and on this occasion several are firing 'chute and cable' - parachute supported cables designed to bring attacking aircraft down. Warrant Officer Philip Brett's Beaufighter has just dropped a torpedo from a height of about 150 feet, while one of the other aircraft from his Wing is attacking another ship with rockets. Two ships were sunk - one credited to Philip Brett - others damaged, and all the aircraft returned safely. Philip Brett describes his experience of the attack on the Certificate of Authentication which accompanies every print.
