Published to mark the 50th Anniversary of the entry into the RAF Service of the Hawker Typhoon on September 11th 1941. Sweeping the battlefields of Europe from Normandy to the Baltic in 1944-45, the rocket-firing Typhoon was the scourge of the German Wehrmacht and air power's most deadly contribution to the allied ground victory. Casualties were high as young men from every part of the Empire took off from dusty improvised airfields - as Frank Wootton's dramatic painting shows - and flung themselves through walls of flak against enemy armour and ground forces. Leadership by brilliant Squadron and Wing Commanders, as personified by the countersignees to this print, was in the highest traditions of the RAF and was at least equal to the Service's achievements elsewhere. Frank Wootton was in Normandy covering the RAF's contribution to the Battle for Europe and scenes from that long dry summer were etched into his memory for ever. The experience gives his magnificent Limited Edition a special poignancy and drama.
