In January 1805, after years of blockade, the French and Spanish fleets broke out as part of a Napoleonic plan to control the English Channel and invade England. The strategy included a diversionary attack on the West Indies. Nelson’s fleet dashed across the Atlantic in pursuit. The French then fled back to their home ports chased by Nelson and the scene was set for the Battle of Trafalgar – 21st October 1805.
